Description
DST-Intel in partnership with NSRCEL@IIMB Business Plan Competition 2011-12 showcases areas with the greatest potential for a positive impact on society through the commercialization of new and truly innovative technologies. Only business plans that make integral use of novel technology, such as technologies in the following industry categories, will be chosen to participate. Team must have their business plan focused in technology areas as listed:
  • Biotechnology
  • Education
  • Electronics & Communication
  • Energy, Environment, Clean Technology
  • Health and Biomedical Devices
  • IT for Agriculture
  • IT for Disabled
  • Manufacturing
  • Social Sustainable Ventures
  • Software and Web Services

While the scope of technology innovation is not restricted to the above, plans without a strong technology focus may not be chosen to compete. The technology implemented in the business plan should also address issues like the novelty of the plan, feasibility, utility aspects and its applicability to disadvantaged people, rural areas and to improving the societal lifestyle.

If business models/entrepreneurship models are proposed, they should be really new and should have significant advantages over existing models.
Who Can Participate?
Open for teams that have held top 3 positions at any Business Plan Competitions held during
April 2011 to March 2012
  1. Teams applying should not be incubated for more than 2 years at prominent business incubators in India
  2. Teams applying should not have received venture capital financing for their business plan.
  3. However, teams which have received seed financing from non-venture capital sources totaling less than INR 10,000,000 are eligible. Teams must provide details of such funding
  4. Each team can be represented by maximum of 2 members
Shortlisting Procedure
  • The executive summaries received from the Open Challenge category will be reviewed by the team of experts who will shortlist the best of the proposals to be taken forward
  • Suitable teams will be invited to submit Detailed Business Plans
  • The detailed business plans received from the open challenge category as well as the Champion of Champions category will get merged at this stage for further selection proces
  • These plans will be assessed by the team of experts who will shortlist the best 40 teams to be nurtured, mentored, given access to incubation and seed funds
  • Top 40 teams will be displayed on Next Big Idea website
  • These 40 teams selected will be invited to attend a 3 day intensive winner's workshop at IIM Bangalore which will be held in Jan / Feb 2012. During the workshop, the teams will get an opportunity to enhance their ideas and present it to the jury who will select the optimal 10 ideas for the next level
  • These 10 teams will undergo 2 more days of intensive mentoring and interact with their chosen mentors to further fine tune their business plans at the end of which they will present to an audience of VCs and HNIs.
  • The top 3 teams selected by VCs/HNIs will represent Next Big Idea at Intel – University of California, Berkeley Technology Entrepreneurship Challenge 2012
Prize money
30 Teams
  • Eligible for seed funding by NSRCEL upto INR 5 million
  • Access to NSRCEL and incubation partners network, if found appropriate
  • Fully Sponsored winners workshop at IIMB with guidance from a mentor panel
  • Merit Certificate from IIMB co-signed by DST and Intel
10 Teams
  • Intense Mentoring by senior mentors
  • Interaction with Venture community
  • Cash Award of INR 25,000 for 7 teams (excluding the Top 3)
Top 3 Teams
  • 1st Prize: Rs 1,50,000
  • 2nd Prize: Rs 1,00,000
  • 3rd Prize: Rs 75,000
  • The top two teams to represent India at the Intel + University of California, Berkeley Technology Enterpreneuship Challenge will be selected the following August by a high-powered coaching board that will engage with the top five teams (of the top ten) via face-to-face and online modes                             @ SURESH REDDY
