9+6+2 = 17

camels
In an Arabian tribal village, an old man died and left behind 17 camels for his three sons. Shortly after the official mourning period was over, the sons opened his last will.

The will was a rather strange one. It stated that the eldest son, being the first-born and the old man’s favorite, should get half of 17 camels while the middle son should be given one-third, and the youngest of the three would get one-ninth of the 17 camels.

Now here was a real problem that the three brothers did not know how to solve. 17 is not a number that could be divided into a precise half, nor could it be divided by 3 or by 9. Each of the sons wanted this interpreted their own way – naturally to each one’s own advantage. Angry and heated exchanges between the three of them continued for several days, without any solution in sight. So tense was the situation that the tribe’s elders intervened and suggested to them that they should visit the oldest and wisest member of the tribe, who would surely be able to come up with a solution for their peculiar problem.
And so, off they went to see this wise elder. The wise man listened to them patiently about their father’s legacy of 17 camels, and appeared to be lost in thought for a while afterwards. Shortly thereafter, as if having reached a conclusion in his own mind, the old man got up and went to the his own cattle yard, and returned after a few minutes, leading one of his own camels, which he added to the 17 camels of the three brothers. So now there were 18 camels in all – an even number.

He then picked up the dead man’s will and read it out again.

Half of 18 being 9, he gave the eldest son 9 camels. The middle son was to get one-third, and one-third of 18 being 6, the middle son was allowed to take 6 camels then came the turn of the youngest son, who was to get one-ninth of 18, which works out to 2, so the old man gave him two camels.

Now figure this out: 9+6+2 = 17, which was the number that the three brothers had been quibbling about initially, before the wise man added the 18th camel, and even after having divided the camels, there was still one camel left – the 18th one, which the wise old man claimed for himself.

Each of the brothers left happy with the brilliant solution offered by the wise man – a solution that neither one of them had been able to come up with. Between the three of them, they left with the same total number of camels that they had come with, and yet, they left happy with the outcome, with no ill-will, with each one of them feeling that it had been a fair solution to the problem.

So what changed? In real terms perhaps nothing? But yet, a peaceful solution had been arrived at. A solution that was acceptable to each one of them. Because when they came, it was with the belief that a commonly acceptable solution to be found by consulting the wise old man. Believing in the possibility of an amicable solution is the first step for any negotiation to be successful, and the 18th camel became the common factor that neutralized the problem.

As is the case with many negotiations, believing that a common ground for a win-win situation can be found is critically important to finding amicable solutions. This helps to shape our attitude, and as is the case with anything else in life, a positive attitude can help to solve any kind of problem. However, a negative frame of mind distorts our vision and we are unable to see the possibility of a solution, which is most often the reason why negotiations break down. So next time we are stuck with any tricky negotiation, we first need to find that 18th camel.

Inspiring Indian success stories that prove nothing is impossible

How often have you come close to giving up on a dream? How often do you regret your decisions? Have you ever wondered you could have achieved something bigger if you were born in a different part of the world? We tend to blame our failures on the smallest of things and eventually give up too soon. But if you take a look at some of the most inspirational success stories, they're all about strong willed people beating the odds to reach the top.

Franklin D. Roosevelt once said, 'When you come to the end of your rope, tie a knot and hang on.' And it seems these people have followed just that. They come from humble beginnings but that hasn't stopped them from realizing their dreams. Here are seven inspirational stories you probably hadn't heard of before. They'll make you believe nothing is impossible.

Govind Jaiswal: In the year 2006, 22-year-old Govind Jaiswal ranked 48 in the Civil Services Exam. His father is a rickshaw puller who sold off his land to provide education to his son. From the money collected after selling off the land, Govind enrolled himself in a coaching class, and ended up qualifying the examinations, and how! The same police officers who once harassed his father now refer to him as ‘sir’. Amidst 10-14 hours of power cuts and the deafening sound of generators, Govind Jaiswal toiled every night and said he first wanted to get his father treated for his wounds. His father had saved a little land he planned to sell for his three daughters’ weddings, but Govind has ensured that won’t happen anymore.

Kartik Sawhney: Kartik Sawhney was rejected by the IITs, so he chose to accept the offer to study further from Stanford! This teenager’s road to success was paved with rejections. The educational system in India failed to find place for this talented boy whose only weakness lies in the fact that he cannot see. In India, blind students can only take subjects like arts and literature after the 8th standard. Kartik wanted to study science and after a lot of effort from an NGO campaign, he was allowed to appear for CBSE board exams with science as his subjects. He scored a whopping 96%, but the IITs denied him admission. Stanford University, however, welcomed the student to study engineering.

Babbar Ali: Famously known as the world’s youngest headmaster, 16-year-old Babbar Ali is determined to provide education to every child in his village. A student of class 12, he attends school in the morning and comes home to ‘Anand Shiksha Niketan’ in the backyard of his house in West Bengal, where he teaches close to 800 students. His school has been recognised by the Bengal State Government, and allows students from here to migrate to other schools out of the village for higher education. There may not be desks or a roof for these students in the village, but they rush to the decrepit backyard of Babbar’s home every afternoon after the bell sounds for the classes to begin.

The all-girls football team from Jharkhand: A group of tribal girls from Jharkhand were beaten and asked to sweep floors by bureaucrats when they requested for birth certificates they needed to apply for passports. Thanks to their American coach Franz Gastler, the girls managed to get passports to travel to Spain to play a football tournament. With no shoes or football gear, the girls may not have won the tournament but won the third prize! The girls dressed up in red-bordered white saris to receive the prize. From being slapped to being felicitated, one of the girls from the team remarked, ‘I do not remember the slap, I remember the Cup.’

Saalumarada Thimmakka: Indian environmentalist Saalumarada Thimmakka was noticed after she planted 284 banyan trees along a four kilometre stretch in Karnataka. She has won the National Citizen’s Award of India and also has an environmental organisation in the US named after her – the Thimmakka's Resources for Environmental Education. Once a casual labourer in a quarry, Thimmakka was married to a cattle herder, but they had no children. She started treating these banyan trees as her children and earned the name ‘Saalumarada’ which means ‘of the row of trees’ in Kannada. The management of these trees is now being taken care of by the Government of Karnataka.

K Jayaganesh: Born and brought up in a village in Vellore, K Jayaganesh cleared the civil sevices examination in his seventh attempt with a rank of 156. He studied to be an engineer but only got odd jobs here and there and started working as a waiter to make ends meet. From the money he earned as a waiter, he started attending coaching classes for civil services examination. He finally got seventh time lucky and out of the 700 candidates selected in the exam, he ranked 156th.

Ashish Goyal: A student of NMIMS, Mumbai, Ashish Goyal was asked to look for a government job by a corporate house during his placements. Ashish Goyal was blind, and only government jobs had reservations for the physically challenged. He put all of this behind him and stood second in his batch in NMIMS and went on to pursue an MBA from the Wharton School. In the year 2010, Ashish Goyal was felicitated by the President of India with the National Award for the Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities. He now works at JP Morgan’s London operations and hopes to bring awareness about the abilities of a person battling with disabilities.

Kalpana Saroj: She was labelled an ‘untouchable’ Dalit in school. At the age of 12 she was forced to marry a man 10 years older, but she escaped that marriage and decided to move to Mumbai. At the age of 16, the hardworking Kalpana Saroj toiled for 18 hours a day. She gradually took over Kamani Tubes, a debt-ridden metal engineering company. After Kalpana joined the company, it turned into a profit making business making over $100 million! One of the most inspirational entrepreneurs today, Kalpana Saroj battled social evils to reach the top and aims to change India for the better.

Weakness or Strength

Inspirational Stories for children with Moral, Motivational thoughts to enrich life, Turn weakness into strength

Sometimes our biggest weakness can become our biggest strength. Take, for example, the story of one 10-year-old boy who decided to study Judo despite the fact that he had lost his left arm in a devastating car accident.

The boy began lessons with an old Japanese Judo master. The boy was doing well, so he couldn’t understand why, after three months of training the master had taught him only one move.

“Sensei,” the boy finally said, “Shouldn’t I be learning more moves?”

“This is the only move you know, but this is the only move you’ll ever need to know.” – the sensei replied.

Not quite understanding, but believing in his teacher, the boy kept training.

Several months later, the sensei took the boy to his first tournament. Surprising himself, the boy easily won his first two matches. The third match proved to be more difficult, but after some time, his opponent became impatient and charged; the boy deftly used his one move to win the match. Still amazed by his success, the boy was now in the finals.

This time, his opponent was bigger, stronger, and more experienced. For a while, the boy appeared to be overmatched. Concerned that the boy might get hurt, the referee called a time-out. He was about to stop the match when the sensei intervened.

“No,” the sensei insisted, “Let him continue.”

Soon after the match resumed, his opponent made a critical mistake: he dropped his guard. Instantly, the boy used his move to pin him. The boy had won the match and the tournament. He was the champion.

On the way home, the boy and sensei reviewed every move in each and every match. Then the boy summoned the courage to ask what was really on his mind.

“Sensei, how did I win the tournament with only one move?”

“You won for two reasons,” the sensei answered. “First, you’ve almost mastered one of the most difficult throws in all of judo. And second, the only known defense for that move is for your opponent to grap your left arm.”

The boy’s biggest weakness had become his biggest strength. Sometimes our biggest weakness can become our biggest strength. ~ Get Inspired ~ Inspire others ~ Share with loved ones ~

A STORY OF TWO FRIENDS

A story tells that two friends were walking through the desert. During some point of
the journey they had an argument, and one friend slapped the other one in the face.
The one who got slapped was hurt, but without saying anything, wrote in the sand
"TODAY MY BEST FRIEND SLAPPED ME IN THE FACE."

They kept on walking until they found an oasis, where they decided to take a bath. The

one who had been slapped got stuck in the mire and started drowning, but the friend
saved him. After he recovered from the near drowning, he wrote on a stone "TODAY
MY BEST FRIEND SAVED MY LIFE."

The friend who had slapped and saved his best friend asked him, "After I hurt you, you
wrote in the sand and now, you write on a stone, why?" The other friend replied
"When someone hurts us we should write it down in sand where winds of Forgiveness can erase it away. But, when someone does something good for us, we must engrave it
in stone where no wind can ever erase it."

LEARN TO WRITE YOUR HURTS IN THE SAND AND TO CARVE YOUR BENEFITS IN STONE.

A Special Person - They say it takes a minute to find a special person, an hour to
appreciate them, a day to love them, but then an entire life to forget them. Take the
time to live!!!

A FROG STORY

A group of frogs were traveling through the woods, and two of them fell into a deep pit. When the other frogs saw how deep the pit was, they told the two frogs that they were as good as dead. The two frogs ignored the comments and tried to jump up out of the pit with all their might. The other frogs kept telling them to stop, that they were as good as dead. Finally, one of the frogs took heed to what the other frogs were saying and gave up. He fell down and died.

The other frog continued to jump as hard as he could. Once again, the crowd of frogs yelled at him to stop the pain and just die. He jumped even harder and finally made it out. When he got out, the other frogs said, “Did you not hear us?” The frog explained to them that he was deaf. He thought they were encouraging him the entire time.

Moral: There is power of life and death in the tongue. An encouraging word to someone who is down can lift them up and help them make it through the day. So be careful of what you say. Speak life to those who cross your path. The power of words… it is sometimes hard to understand that an encouraging word can go such a long way.

What you need Vs what you want?

What you want from life? The simple answer is “Everything“. When it comes about creating a list of desires then even 100 sheets of paper will prove insufficient. I want more success, I want a happy married life, I want money, I want… this… and even that!.

To be true a man lives his life to gain or attempting-to-gain whatever he desires? There are a few fellows that do it very successfully, but the majority appears to be heard-walking and trapped in a kind of rat race.  They know that “To win a race they will have  to run; the problem is is that their journey is direction less.”

Except for those non-greedy fellows each and every human being on this planet desires for money. Not just money, they dream for more and more money. An increment made in the desired value with every second thought about the Green-Stuff. Same is the case with fame, power, and many other significant things in life.

Now, you must be wandering why am I talking about here and there. Well, the lines below will let you know. Have a look on the lines stated below and read them aloud in your Mind.

What you want? The correct answer to this question will always be a desire.
What you need? The generic answer is “Food, clothes, and shelter”. What else you need …
This is probably the most significant line in whole article. The best question to ask is “What I need to get what I want?“
For instance, if your relationship is normal, bad or good and you desire to make it better. Then the foremost requirement will to accomplish the tasks needed to attain the objective.

Every desire is associated with a set of requirements and once you fulfill those the stuff will be acquired automatically. What I am talking about is a very broad idea applicable for most of the things. It will be your responsibility to identify your objectives and their requirement.

Also, you need is to be very realistic with your approach i.e. You must consider yourself as an entity and evaluate your pros & cons in an unbiased manner. Here. I am not telling you to look on your current circumstance and say this is me. You will need to identify yourself, the real you and abilities of this you that resides within you.

Remember that is nothing is unreachable, provided it falls within your area of expertise. If not, then need not  to worry i.e. all you need is to acquire right set of skills needed for the job.

Just focus on action required to attain what you desire and very soon your wishes will turn into reality.

SELF IMPROVEMENT ACTIVITIES

Self-improvement is a lifelong process. The concept of self-improvement consists of several activities that help you in becoming more productive and achieve better quality of life. This article focuses on some of the activities that you can inculcate in your life. The first activity is ‘focusing on one task at a time’. It is believed that in order to get most out of life, one should concentrate on only one activity at a time. This will ensure that all your energies are directed at a single task which will prove useful in accomplishing the desired results.

The second activity is about using your energy on important things. What’s the point in wasting energy on frivolous activities that will not bring any fruitful results? Watching useless TV channels, surfing net for no important reasons, worrying all the time etc are some of the worthless activities. Indulging in such activities will rob you off your energy and enthusiasm. One should always prioritize important tasks first and then putting all his efforts and energies on fulfillment of those tasks.

The next self improvement activity should be focused on controlling one’s thoughts. Negative thoughts tend to affect our productivity and act as a hindrance in the process of self-improvement. It is important to emotionally disengage from the curse of negative thinking. Moving on to next activity, it must be the ability to get organized. If you are not organized, chaos will ruin your mental peace. In order to live a stress free life, we must live in an organized manner. You should be organized in not only in your mind but also in your home.
The last self improvement activity of this article is about the art of living in the present. There is no point mulling over your past and pondering over your future. All you have is your present and that’s why you should make the most of it. It is important to enjoy every present moment. This will help you tremendously in improving your inner as well as outer being.

How to Give Your Attitude a Boost

We all know how important attitude is. This one factor can determine the way our life is headed. They say, your attitude is everything. So how do you define attitude? The simplest definition of attitude is, how you see the things around you, how you deal with the situations you face, and what you think about life. If your attitude is negative, your life is negative and that is a pretty straightforward equation. It is important to give your attitude a boost but how? Let me offer some wonderful tips that you can always implement in your life to have a great attitude.

First thing first. Rise and Shine! Yes, that means it is always better to have an early start to the day. Get up early, walk for a while and enjoy the morning beauty. It will invigorate your senses. Never fret over the things. There will always be a tomorrow and tomorrow is always a new day. Many a times, things won’t go your way but that does not mean you lose hope or feel bad over the way events have folded. Always remember that as time passes, so do your troubles. No matter how down and out you feel, life will surely turn for the better and that’s an eternal truth.

Remember, you are master of your own destiny. If there is one person who can give you a good attitude then it is you and you alone. A good and positive attitude can be developed whenever you want it to. It is not a herculean task to wake up tomorrow with a brand new outlook on life. Just remember, you are the master and you are the executioner.

4 Small motivational stories, But had rich meaning

1. That’s Faith :

Once, all villagers are decided to pray for rain, on the day of the prayer all people gathered but only one boy came with umbrella.

2.   That’s Trust :

When you throw a baby in the air, she laughs because she knows you will catch her…..

3. That’s Hope :

Every night we go to bed, without any assurance of being alive the next morning but still we set the alarms to wake up.

4. That’s Confidence :

We plan big things for tomorrow in spite of zero knowledge of the future or having any certainty of uncertainties.

MEANINGLESS GOALS

A farmer had a dog who used to sit by the roadside waiting for vehicles to come around. As soon as one came he would run down the road, barking and trying to overtake it. One day a neighbor asked the farmer "Do you think your dog is ever going to catch a car?" The farmer replied, "That is not what bothers me. What bothers me is what he would do if he ever caught one." Many people in life behave like that dog who is pursuing meaningless goals.

Life is hard by the yard, but by the inch, it's a cinch.

You Can Change Others Life

A bus carrying only ugly people is involved in a crash, and everyone in the bus dies.

They go to Heaven. Because of the grief they have suffered, God decides to grant them one wishes each, before they enter Paradise.

They're all lined up, and God asks the first one what their wish is. The person answers, I want to be beautiful, and so God snaps His fingers, and it is done. The second one in line sees this and says I want to be beautiful too. Another snap of His fingers and the wish is granted.

This goes on for a while, ! but when God is halfway down the line, the last person in line starts laughing. When there are only ten people left, this man is rolling on the floor, laughing..

Finally, God gets to the end of the line and asks the laughing one what his wish will be. The man eventually catches his breath, and says, "Make them all ugly again."

Moral - Don't get disheartened for being last, as you can still change others lives being last

A good story for a laugh But from this story you can also learn that you also need to be aware of what desires people around you have, you when fulfill your dreams.

Worthy of the best

You are worthy of the best in life. So act like it.

You are worthy, but that doesn’t mean you’re entitled. It means you have the responsibility to live up to that worthiness, to live up to your full potential.

You are worthy of the best because you are capable of creating, experiencing and enjoying the best. You can reach inside yourself, feel your authentic desire, and bring that desire to life.

You are worthy, and yet that doesn’t mean you can have what you want without effort. In fact, it is your worthiness that obligates you to make those efforts that will bring about the best you can imagine.

Remember always how truly worthy, beautiful and unique you are. Live each moment of your life as an expression of that worthiness.

Let your thoughts, priorities and actions reflect the worthiness that is you. You are worthy of the best, so be your best, now and always.

Whatever Happens, It Happens for Good

This story is about a king who was fond of hunting and was always accompanied with a minister who was very close to him. This minister had a habit of saying to everyone, "Whatever happens, it happens for good" and this annoyed other ministers in the court.

During one of the hunting excursions, the king's toe finger was chopped off and as per his habit the minister couldn't stop himself from saying, "Whatever happens, it happens for good". Since the king was the victim this time, he got very annoyed with the minister and put him in jail.

In an another hunting trip, the king was captured by Cannibals and was about to be killed, when they noticed one of his toe finger missing. As per their tradition, they were not allowed to kill a person whose any body part was missing. So, they set him free.

The king recalled the words of his minister and realised how true were his words. He went to the minister in jail and apologised for his mistake. However, the minister said that it was good that he was jailed. Otherwise, he would have accompanied the king for the hunting trip & eaten by cannibals.

Many times we are taken aback by the short term impact of an event and don't realise that each of these events has a design for shaping our long term future. It is nature's way of controlling our lives.

The Management Story

This is a bit sarcastic & nasty one...

A big corporation hired several cannibals. "You are all part of our team now," said the HR manager during the welcome briefing. "You get all the usual benefits and you can go to the cafeteria for something to eat, but please don't eat any of the other employees." The cannibals promised they would not.

A few weeks later the cannibals' boss remarked, "You're all working very hard, and I'm satisfied with you. However, one of our shipping clerk has disappeared. This has affected our sales badly, since no material could move out. Do any of you know what happened to her?" The cannibals all shook their heads, "No," they said.

After the boss left, the leader of the cannibals said to the others angrily, "Right, which one of you idiots ate the shipping clerk?"

A hand rose hesitantly in admission. "You fool!" said the leader, "For weeks we've been eating managers and no one noticed anything, but you had to go and eat someone so important for the business!..."

Moral: Your importance is governed by contribution you make & not by your level.

Learning to live without recognition

short inspirational, motivational story
There was a farmer who had a horse and a goat…..One day, the horse became ill and he called the veterinarian, who said: - Well, your horse has a virus. He must take this medicine for three days. I’ll come back on the 3rd day and if he’s not better, we’re going to have to put him down.
Nearby, the goat listened closely to their conversation. The next day, they gave him the medicine and left. The goat approached the horse and said: - Be strong, my friend.
Get up or else they’re going to put you to sleep!

On the second day, they gave him the medicine and left. The goat came back and said:
- Come on buddy, get up or else you’re going to die! Come on, I’ll help you get up.
Let’s go! One, two, three…

On the third day, they came to give him the medicine and the vet said:
- Unfortunately, we’re going to have to put him down tomorrow. Otherwise, the virus might spread and infect the other horses. After they left, the goat approached the horse and said:
- Listen pal, it’s now or never! Get up, come on! Have courage! Come on! Get up! Get up!
That’s it, slowly! Great! Come on, one, two, three… Good, good. Now faster, come on…… Fantastic! Run, run more! Yes! Yay! Yes! You did it, you’re a champion!!!

All of a sudden, the owner came back, saw the horse running in the field and began shouting:
- It’s a miracle! My horse is cured. We must have a grand** **party. Let’s kill the goat!!!!*
***
The Lesson:* this often happens in the workplace & life in general . Nobody truly knows which employee or people actually deserves the merit of success & are in fact contributing towards success , or who’s actually contributing the necessary support to make things happen. Be grateful.
Remember………
*LEARNING TO LIVE WITHOUT RECOGNITION IS A SKILL!!!!*
If anyone ever tells you that your work is unprofessional, remember:
Amateurs built the Ark [which saved all the species]
and
professionals built the Titanic [all died tragically]
